Speaker of the Union

Following the Resignation of Odd Republic as Speaker of the Union, and in keeping with the six month term called for under the Second Constitution of the Social Liberal Union, it falls to me to organize a new election for Speaker of the Union. Thus, according to Article 3 Section 2 of the Third Constitution of the Social Liberal Union, which was enacted during the term of the previous Speaker, an election is now triggered.

The following positions are up for election:

Speaker of the Union: The presiding officer of the Open Parliament and Chief Officer of the Legislative branch. Duties include: Maintaining, keeping, updating, and preserving records in accordance with all applicable legislation; determining time-frames and otherwise administering votes; administering matters relating to the running of regional infrastructure such as the forum; overseeing Cabinet discussions; and cooperating to draft and improve legislation.

The term for Speaker of the Union is to last Five (5) Calendar months, ending at 00:00 on Thursday 25th January 2018 Friday 2nd February 2018, and may be renewed once.

The Election Administrator is Kanoria .

Nominations will last for a period of circa ten days, starting at 03:00 GMT+1 on Tuesday 8 August, 2017, and concluding at 00:00 GMT+1 on Friday 18 August, 2017 Saturday 26th August, followed immediately by voting, which shall last for a period of one week, ending on Friday 25 August, 2017 Friday 1st September. 

You may declare yourself a candidate or nominate another state for the running (they, of course, would have to accept the nomination). Candidates, please campaign during the nominations period.

Thank you both for the nomination. For now, however, I will decline, as I think and feel that I am in the wrong position and the wrong person for the role.

If, however, a number of nations want me to stand, I may revise that position, given as I know that those who have nominated me are quite adamant about the idea that I should. Likewise if an insufficient number of nations choose to stand, I will in order to give a proper contest.

I will nominate Courelli, who has done a fantastic job as Minister of Domestic Affairs, and who I strongly believe would run Open Parliament in such an innovative manner. I will also fourth the nomination of Hirematia, who has been an efficient and effective Minister and Deputy Minister of Immigration, and will third the nomination for Anaaxes, who has an outstanding record and is best suited to bring the Library of Parliament to full fruition.

Thank you for the nomination, Odd. I respectfully decline, as I feel like I am not familiar enough with the Library of Parliament and the workings of the Open Parliament to faithfully execute the duties of the office. I am better suited, at least for now, to the Executive Branch, and am still working to make my Ministry (and the region) the best it can be.

I look forward to collaborating with the new Speaker in any role that I may have or assume during their tenure.

I will have to decline my nominations, as I have been busy lately, will likely be too busy in the near future to fulfill the job requirements, and I am not familiar enough with the workings of the LoP in order to make a good Speaker.

I am grateful to have been nominated but I must decline it as it is not in my schedule as of now.

The Nominations period is now closed by the original deadline. However, as this is a single winner election, and only one candidate is standing, Article 8, Section 7 of the Third constitution of the Social Liberal Union mandates that the deadline for nominations be extended by one week.

If at the end of this week, only one candidate is standing, an approval election will be held. 

Thus, the deadline for nominations is now extended to Friday 25th August 2017.

Thank you for the nomination, but due to school starting, my lack of intense knowledge about how the position of Speaker works, and my other positions held in Nationstates I will have to decline.

I will second the nomination of @phrenics, however, and will also nominate Harndon, Avaerilon, Lawattsia, and Mons Garle.

Many thanks for the kind nomination. If I had the time to devote to the job, I would certainly be keen to run. For the time being, however, I'm too busy IRL to justify holding such an important position, and it would not be fair to the region. I must therefore decline (::)
