The Confederate States of the Tohjo Continental Empire, commonly referred to as the Tohjo Empire (TE) or the Empire, is an imperial state and a sovereign nation in the World of Pokemon. Extending across the entirety of southern Tohjo continent, the Tohjo Empire spans nine time zones and incorporates a wide range of environments and landforms. It shares maritime borders with Hoenn by the Johtonian Sea and the nation of Sinnoh across the North Sea. The TE is surrounded by the Southern Ocean to its west and south, and the North Sea to its east. The TE has an area of 17,075,400 square kilometres (6,592,800 sq mi), covering more than one-eighth of the Earth's inhabited land area, and making it the 2nd-largest sovereign state in the world and the largest within the Four Nations. The TE is also the world's third most populous nation with nearly 165 million people as of 2015.
The nation's history began with that of the Archains, who emerged as a recognizable group in Tohjo between the 3rd and 8th centuries AA. Founded and ruled by Archain warrior elites and their descendants, the medieval states of Johto and Kanto arose in the 10th century. In 988 the Kingdom of Kanto adopted Arceism from the Sinnoh subcontinent, beginning the synthesis of Archain and Sinnoh cultures that defined eastern Tohjo culture for the next millennium. Over the centuries, the Kingdom of Kanto grew in power and stature, overthrowing many of the neighboring Johtonian provinces and off continent tribes (present day Hoenn), spreading Archain influence and culture throughout the region of the Four Nations. The Kingdom of Kanto ultimately disintegrated into a number of smaller states; most of the Kanto lands were overrun by the militant faction Team Rocket and became satellite states for their leader's base of operations. In 1435, the Grand Champion of Pallet gradually reunified the surrounding Kanto principalities, achieved independence from Team Rocket, and came to dominate the cultural and political legacy of the Kanto region. By the 15th century, the Kingdom of Johto had greatly expanded through conquest, annexation, and exploration. In 1439, after the failed resurrection of Team Rocket militants in Johto were quelled, and in order to prevent war between the two states, the Grand Champion of Pallet and the King of Johto unified their two kingdoms to become the Tohjo Empire, creating the third largest empire in history, stretching from Cianwood City, the westernmost point of the Tohjo continent to the Lavender shrine, the easternmost point of the Tohjo continent.
Following the Unification Revolution, the Confederate States of the Tohjo Continental Empire became the largest and leading constituent of the Four Nations, the world's first constitutionally imperial monarchy and a recognized superpower, which played a decisive role in the Unovian Civil War. The Empire's Indigo era saw some of the most significant technological achievements of the 20th century, including the world's first human-made Pokemon, and the first man-to-Pokemon transformation, and the creation of the Pokemon storage system. Following the dissolution of the Imperial throne in 1991, and the creation of a federally elected Elite Four legislature, the TE reconstituted itself as a continental federation state, while retaining its status and namesake as a confederate empire. Currently, the Tohjo Empire (continental federation) is recognized as the continuing legal personality (the sole successor state) of the Tohjo Imperial state.
The TE economy ranked as the third largest by nominal GDP and second largest by purchasing power parity in 1998, but has been on steady decline in the past decade. The Empire's extensive mineral and energy resources, the largest reserves in the world, have made it one of the largest producers of timber and natural gas globally. The country is one of the five recognized nuclear weapons states and possesses the second largest stockpile of weapons of mass destruction. The TE is a great power and a permanent member of the Four Nations, a member of the G6, the Council of Genwunn, the Tohjo-Kalosian Economic Cooperation, the Sinnoh Cooperation Organization, the Maritime Powers Economic Community, as well as being the leading member of the Commonwealth of Interdependent Confederate States.
