Following the innovation and great success of the Fireside Chats (Hats off to Ava), it has been proposed that the system now be rolled out further! This thread is for discussion of that very idea! What we have so far is the notion: - An always on IRC chat
- With allocated times for department specific chats
- A weekly chat with the delegate preserved
- All on the same Chanel
- A weekly schedule published in the Regional Factbook
- Fun
- Mayhem
- Madness
As it stands, the client for the IRC that is proposed is: Cryptocat The Provisional schedule is: Monday: DA Tue: General Wed:FA Thur:General Fri: Imm Sat: Delegate Sun: General - (I was thinking about having a social and catch up chat, where regional general will be asked and answered, and homage the original name -Fireside) We have a few things we need to decide for certain still, the rough time that chats will Occur, and how long on average they should last for (for the availability of ministers/ deputies) Any further decisions etc should be discussed here, after that, I will whip up a quick bill, we will talk it through here, amend as required, and then stick it up for vote. Hopefully all in time for the next set of ministers to be in post.

Many regions have a mibbit/espernet irc channel that's always on - we could consider that option too

Ideally, Chat wise, we should have a client that doesn't require too much work for people to access and is friendly to new members of the region who may have no knowledge of IRC or channels, and may be unwilling to register on another separate site or to install new software (even just an addon).I do not know if such an option exists, and if it does, how we maximize security on it. It may also be worth us looking into the idea of using a service like that we already do (Chatzy or similar), and change the password once a week or with a security issue? I am not overly familiar with the way online chat works, but we will want as few obstacles as we can get to access.

I prefer it for its privacy and PM ability. However, Chatzy works better for the scheduled chats, since you can see the backlog.

Ideally, we would want a longer than is available free on Chatzy, so that we can copy the logs of ministerial questions to the forum and things. I might put a poll on this thread later on to see what people prefer as an idea.

We could schedule to use the different clients during the week and then decide which one is most suited for our needs.

We could indeed, probably try for 5 candidate services, 2 chat-room type, 2 IRC standard type, then whichever is more popular, run a third of that type, and work out what we want thereafter? Does that make sense, all?.

I did have one further idea that we may be able to, depending on the limits of what proboards allows, be able to append a facebook style chat panel into the forum, though that is a rather limited sort of an interface, and may not make things any easier than just the existing shoutbox, so perhaps best we avoid that.

I think it's probably best to keep the forum and the chat seperate to avoid confusion thought it was a cool idea.

Okay, if that is agreed then, we need to come up with a list of ones to try. The four of us here should be enough for trials, but it would be better if we had more, and a broader base for the decision. Still, the current step we need is to decide which we are keenest to try, and when we can do it.
I propose the following timetable:
Trials start on Wednesday with our first IRC After that, our first chatroom, on Thursday, Second IRC on Friday, Second chatroom on Saturday (assuming that is the fireside chat, that should be chatzy, but open all day). During this, we should decide wheterh we like IRC or Chat-room more. Then on Sunday, we can have our final trial, for the third of whichever format we end up preferring. We should make our final decision of which service we like best during this chat Drafting (about two-three days) Then voting for one week.
If that is good with everyone, we need to decide which services we are testing, and then get the delegate to send out a mass tg to the region.

We could publicise the trials on the RMB to make sure lots of people use it and we get maximum feedback on what people like.

Probably for the best, I would use a pester-gram as well though.

Great ideas here - I fully support what Kanoria has proposed as well as the trials this week (though I would probably be of limited help practically organising this, since I have very little experience of such chats)

I can't rightly claim full credit, NI, I have just been doing the organizing and contributed a few ideas to it so far. If anyone wants to take over the practical (which I myself have never been most qualified at), they'd be welcome to, I just like playing with ideas and hope to get the region the best long term solution.
Tomorrow, I think we should be trying Cryptocat, going by the schedule. Zunk, can you put together a short set of instructions and post them here for people who want to test with us?

Oh BTW anyone who is interested, the cryptocat test is online from now, it will be running for more than 24 hours. The chatname is slutest.

I would like to try a fake FA questions on it for half an hour tomorrow, if possible.

I can unfortunately probably not be there to answer any fake questions tomorrow - my schedule is rather packed.

I don't think I'll be much use for testing tomorrow but we'll see how things pan out.

So long as we have a few people testing, it's fine, Even if it means we end up doing a vote based on reports detailing Plus and Minuses for each service, it's better than nothing.

One point I can make is that Cryptocat does not appear to have any service for mobile users which may prevent some people from participating in chats. I myself found that most of the fireside chats were held when I had no access to a PC and so being able to use Chatzy on mobile was a real positive.

It does have an iPhone app, and an Android app is being developed. But that is a con for Android users.

The first stage poll has been posted, please indicate if you would prefer a Chat-Room style service or an IRC style service. The final test will be of a style determined by this vote.

The vote on preferred style of service will run until the start of the Fireside chat. A final service to try shall be picked during the chat, and a vote held to determine the service which has the greatest level of regional backing.Drafting will begin while the vote is ongoing, and the bill will be presented to Parliament thereafter for ratification. The bill will cover: 1) The formal establishment of round the clock chats 2) Questions to ministers in post 3 Debates 4) Scheduling
