Has your nation had a variety of flags in the past? Why not show us, and tell us about them? (OOC: They don't have to have been used in NS itself- this thread is for RP purposes)

This was the banner of King Arthur during his quest to unite Avaerilon into one during the Great Saxon Invasion. The black field represents the darkness of the time, while the pentangle is an old symbol for healing, hope, strength, magic and nature. It is also white to symbolise a light in the dark.

With Arthur's mustering of the forces of Avaerilon successful and the invaders repelled, the new king of a united Avaerilon needed a new flag. Although this retained the black field, the meaning of the field is absolution and time. This also marks the first appearance of Y Ddraig Werdd, or "The Green Dragon" on a flag. The dragon has always been present in the tales of all four native peoples, and revered by them. It is also the most cherished of all the dragon breeds native to Avaerilon. It symbolises the people as one.
1088-1154

In a radical departure from previous flags, this more square-shaped one features a new field and mascot. Y Unicorn Wydd, "The White Unicorn," symbolises the resolve and freedom of Avaerilon, with the purple field displaying bravery and courage. At this time, Avaerilon stood on the brink of being invaded by numerous nations. While it never was in the end, the king believed Avaerilonians needed another symbol to trust in. To this day, the unicorn is a common symbol used for Avaerilon.
1154-1223

A strikingly modern style, this old flag features a cross symbolising the four home isles of Avaerilon, and the purple cross within the larger is for the honour and courage of its people. The pentangle makes a return, and the light-blue background is for the seas that surround Avaerilon. The flag had been changed to celebrate the formal adoption of the name "Williams" by the royal family.
1223-1406

Both the unicorn and dragon are mascots on a modified version of the previous flag. Largely changed due to Avaerilonian military victories overseas, it also serves an aesthetic purpose.
1407-1470

This bold flag is reminiscent of the Roman banner. Indeed, this was intentional. Avaerilon, a recognised bastion of scholarly learning and reasoning, had one of the world's most extensive and developed democracies and societies, and was considered the spiritual successor to the Roman Empire in a number of ways. This was capitalised on by Parliament, which held a referendum to decide the new flag. The field is the ocean, the laurel crown for democracy, and the dragon the people. The letters stand for "Rhyfeddol Unedig Deyrnas o Afaerilon," or "The Wondrous United Kingdom of Avaerilon."
1470-1796

With the Renaissance in full-swing, a contest was organised by the monarch to decide on a new flag, to celebrate a new constitution, bill of rights, and various other political and democratic achievements. Myrddin the Wise impressed the king the most out of a thousand scholars, and was chosen to create the new flag. The blue field was retained, as was the dragon, but inserted was a gold crown for the government and monarch, and a cross with vines for strength, nature, reasoning and peace.
1796-1884

After the death of Robert the Bard, the last hereditary monarch of Avaerilon, it was felt a new flag should symbolise the new era of an elected monarchy. Aoife an Iontach, a celebrated artist, was chosen by the newly-elected king to design the flag. Her creation is the forebear to the most recent flags- a light blue field for the sea and island-nature of Avaerilon, and the long, shallow shape. The unicorn returns in this flag. A purple saltire was added to symbolise the four isles coming-together as one.
1884-2012

Y Hydd Arian. or "The Silver Stag," is a common animal in Avaerilonian lore and folk-tales. Meant to represent the mercy, mystery and grace of nature, this beautiful beast was adorned to a flag designed by students from the University of Avalon, following a competition amongst Avaerilon's hoard of universities. The field is kept form the previous flag, but the saltire is changed to light-blue for the isles, and the cross to purple for the brave people that populate the land. With the surge in interest in Celtic literature and lore, it was felt to be appropriate to affix the pentangle once more.
2012- Present Day

In-recognition of a Williams ascending to the throne once again, His Majesty was informed that it would be "proper and correct" for the nation to approve a new flag in His honour. The Green Dragon returns to represent his people, along with a bigger pentangle. The remainder of the flag is unchanged. A referendum in 2012 approved this new design.
