Wait, why are we starting at the Indigo Plateau? Wouldn't it make more sense to start in maybe, and this is going really out there, Pallet Town? We can all be neighbors or something who are rivals/buddies and we can go beat the Gym Leaders as a team (Gym leader will be in a team with some other person) or alone (Gym leader only). Just brainstorming a bit here.
