I have a new beta that is going to be going up soon. I just cleaned up the code a bit and the program is actually a little bit smaller ;D
Further updated the beta. Cheers! I've decided that it's stable enough and I would like to ask which one people prefer.

1.0.5 seems to work better. I like it, but there are too many ties. And maybe merge the 2 windows after you click Run?

I like it! Is there any way you put the data input on the same screen rather than a seperate text document, that way you can modify it immediately after finding the result?
But I like the pretty new display format :D

I'm working on it and a few more tweaks.

Cool!
I love how I keep checking the updates, even though I never get involved in RP or wars so I'll probably never need it xD

BRAND NEW UPDATE FOR THE BETA!!!! The link is the same, but the files have been updated. There is only one window that comes up when you click run and there should be a lot less ties than before. Leader weight has been increased as has soldier weight, albeit to a lesser amount. I'm going to do a few more tweaks and I'll release it without the "beta" tag. I HAZ TEH NEED FOR MOAR TESTERZ!

I've got a new beta version ready. I made an extreme departure from what I've been doing and finally learned how to display bitmaps. ;D
I removed the three buttons that were in the previous version and put in their place a menu bar! You can now change the terrain of the battle from the menu and see that change on the window itself!

I really have to get to weather now and tie that in with seasons. Spring: - Sunny Day 50%
- Light Rain 35%
- Heavy Rain 10%
- Light Snow 5%
Summer: - Sunny Day 60%
- Light Rain 25%
- Heavy Rain 15%
Autumn: - Sunny Day 50%
- Light Rain 25%
- Heavy Rain 10%
- Light Snow 15%
Winter: - Sunny Day 45%
- Light Snow 30%
- Heavy Snow: 25%
Sunny Day: Full air support* available Light Rain: Small hit to air support Heavy Rain: Large hit to air support Light Snow: Large hit to air support Heavy Snow: No air support *air support to be added

Great! I'll test the update tomorrow.
If you'd like, I think I'd be able to get exact figures on how cars, trucks, aircraft etc respond to certain types of rain and snow, since we have an R&D department at my work specialized in weather engineering and, as you might have guessed, the science of snow. ;)

See, that's the thing. I don't know if I should leave the numbers abstracted and have air/naval support as a modifier or institute specific units (infantry, armour, fighters, battleships, etc.) and balance out how they interact.

I'll see what my engineering colleagae from R&D think would make the most sense. I'll ask them for some simplified figures as well as a judgement of what would be better and why tomorrow. Be prepared for something that's very, VERY complicated. Or, in true American fashion: call it a challenge. ;)

I rewrote most of my code to accommodate the different unit types, and I am now willing to present a beta version of it called 3.0.0. I have also decided that the beta version of 2.0.0 is fine for release. There is no useful help file, but I am working on it now. Basically, the data file is structured as follows:
(terrain; p,h,m,v,r) (attacker name) (amount of infantry) (amount of armour) (amount of fighters) (amount of bombers) (amount of battleships) (defender name) (amount of infantry) ... (leader experience [attacker]; 1 through 10) (leader experience [defender]; ^^) (soldier experience [attacker]; ^^) (soldier experience [defender]; ^^) (season; spring, summer, fall/autumn [either works], and winter [all lowercase])
This allows you to micromanage your army a bit. I'm still working on a few things, but this seems to work. Beta test, please. :D

What about aircraft carriers?

Post by North American Republics on Aug 20, 2012 13:35:19 GMT
Coding in all of that took hours. ;)
I can code in aircraft carriers and give aircraft a modifier based on how many aircraft carriers you use, but give me some time. :P Having at least something from each branch I think is a good start, although I really don't have anything ready yet for naval battles. I really want to get to them, though, and that's my next step.

Ok, nice progress!
My colleagae did a really good job in explaining the magical world of weather engineering and physics to me, so I'm gonna try to do explain the impact of weather to vehicles for you here, in a simplified manner.
Two major factors play a role in the effect of waather on the operation of powered vehicles: 1. Resistance/friction created by weather conditions and 2. Long-distance vision. No surprises here, I guess.
Since I know NAR is pretty good at technology and math, I'm going to stick with just saying that air, rain, dust, snow etc. aren't all the same. There are different kinds of rain, hail, snow, haze etc, with particles with different weights and chemical composition (within certain limits, of course). Also, the way rain and snow travel from cloud to the ground is different for each different kind of particle. Nowadays, several institutions and companies around the world have the ability to calculate the exact path, but this science is incredibly complicated and way beyond Grolasch' understanding.
To simplify it a bit, let's say we have a Light, Medium and Heavy particle. Light Haze could mean long-distance vision is only 50% is what it is normally, for example. This would, in normal operations, solely impact aircraft relying on visual cues for flying. This so-called Visual Flight Rules (VFR) mode is primarily used by very small aircraft (think Cessna). Only small military prop-powered trainers will be effected. Traffic usually is affected by a small delay, say, 5% more travelling time from origin to destination. Marine traffic isn't impacted yet at this point.
With Medium and Heavy Haxe, things get nastier. Medium: 15% long-distance vision, air traffic impacted with hour+-long delays, only aircraft with semi- and autolanding capabilities are allowed in the airspace (most military aircraft do not have this, road traffic 20% more travel time, and small boats (< 20m) are not allowed to sail. Large inland boats and ships can carry on duties, but only at 75% speed. Heavy Haze is disastrous: 5% vision. Only the most sophisticated aircraft are legally allowed to fly (think A320/330/340/380 and B777/787 series), non-major airports close, major airports close most runways, military aircraft are grounded, government recommends people not to travel by car,75% more travel time over land, only large, modern ships are sailing, but with a 50% speed penalty.
Same story for rain and snow, just to make it not too difficult for you to implement. ;) You can add seasons and do at-random cimpact calculations - within certain limits, of course - if you want to complicate this a little more. If you want more details, fire away, and I'll ask.

:O So many details... I have to take a break now. Seriously. My mind is running all over the place since I "finished" writing 3.0.0. I still like the abstract version, but I'm going to see what I can do to bring the more detailed version to fruition after a short break from programming. :P
Thanks Grolsch, now I don't have to look up that stuff myself. :D

Yeah, that's understandable. No problem. If you need more, just tell me.*
*: I cannot give you the exact models, cuz none of us have computers powerful enough to run them (besides that, they're proprietary).
