GEOGRAPHY[/b][/u]
Location:
Between 59°N and 63°N
Area:
53000km² (about the size of the state of New York)
- Land: 46000km²
- Rivers/Lakes: 7000km²
Climate: Official Climate Charts
The climte varies greatly: on coastal cities like Rohelinn, the climate is typical subpolar oceanic. Daily temperatures vary from -0,6°C in January to 10,1°C in July. The diurnal range is relatively small, not more than 6°C difference between daily high and low temperatures. The sea remains ice-free whole year round.
More landward, the climate transfers to subarctic. In the capital city Jungle Grove, 120km north of the sea, daily temperatures vary from -8,2°C in January to 11,2°C in August. These locations also receive more hours of sunshine and less rain than coastal regions.
There is no permafrost, except at the northernmost areas.
Due to the short distance to the arctic circle, the length of day varies greatly, from about 5 hours in winter up to 20 in summer. Jungle Grove enjoys civil twilight in June and July.
Geography:
Zmon is relatively flat, from 0m at the coast to 312m at Kõrgmägi hill. There are no earthquake fault lines or active volcanoes on Zmon territory.
The country is heavily forested, with conifers, pine, birch and spruce as most common indigenous species. Black bears, moose, foxes and wolves, various types of rodents, small breeds of sheep and goats make up the indigenous fauna.
Land use and environment:
- Hemiboreal forests: 70%
- Agriculture: 12%
- Urban: 15%
- Industry: 3%
Land use is heavily regulated. All animals are protected by law due to compulsory vegetarianism. Every houshold is required to preserve 40% of its property as 'wild', i.e. no removing trees or weeds. Farming is concentrated in the southern half of the country, where there is a longer growing season. Most grown crops: barley, potatoes, oat, beet, rye, turnips and various kinds of cabbage. In the summer, more exotic plants can grow in greenhouses due to the long daylight hours, like tomatoes and zucchinis. Agrochemicals are forbidden.
Resources:
geothermal energy, lumber, minerals, peat
POPULATION[/b][/u]
Population:
Total: 835000
Density: 15,75 inhabitants per km²
Ethnicity:
Sami/caucasian: 87%
Asian: 8%
Black/Hispanic: 3%
Other: 2%
Religion:
Gaian Ecologism is the official state religion. All inhabitants of Zmon are required to regard nature as Creator, Regulator and Ruler of all that existed, exists and shall exist. This tradition is relatively new it its current form, due to the massive immigration of Shinto Asian people in the 20th century and the recent global warming pandemia.
Language:
Zmoni is a fairly isolated language of the Ugric/Finnic group. Its closest relatives are Finnish/Suomi and Estonian/Eesti. In coastal towns where there is a large concentration of Asian immigrants, Japanese is de facto the second language.
Japanese is taught at school at 12 years and up.
Literacy is around 95% and the government is still trying to improve this number by setting up schools in the many isolated communities.
GOVERNMENT[/b][/u]
Government:
Zmon is organized as a highly democratic multi-party republic.
The president has a strictly ceremonial function, and the nation is led by the First Parliament (Üksime Valitsus), which in its turn is regulated by the Second Parliament (Kakseme Valitsus).
All laws independent of the constitution are subject to volunatry national referendum. Each sunday, all inhabitants are allowed to voice their opinion about the propositions, by mail or physically at the town hall.
Laws that require adjustments to the constitution need to pass a mandatory referendum with 60%.
All administration is centralized in the capital city of Jungle Grove.
Administrative Divisions:
Zmon is divided in 5 large regions:
- Lään-Meremaa: the western coastal regions, capital city Rohelinn
- Id-Meremaa: the eastern coastal regions, capital city Vesilinn
- Südamaa: a small inland region, containing the nation's capital Jungle Grove (Junglelinn)
- Metsamaa: a sparsely populated region in the west, capital Puulinn
- Viljatumaa: the largely uninhabited north and eastern part of the country, no capital city
Legal System:
Zmon enjoys a very effective system of social control. There is a small police force, who work mostly anonymously and focuses on mediation first and sanctioning last.
Death penalty is long abolished, and long jail terms are virtually unknown, but criminals are expulsed from the community and openly shunned. Crimes against nature are treated as the worst violations.
Speeding is a problem. Although cars are banned in major cities and public transport is encouraged, it is a virtual no mans land on the few expressways in the country.
Elections:
First parliament elections are every 4 years with a maximum term of 8 years, while second parliament elections are every 2 years with a maximum term of 6 years. Politicians in the First Parliament are forbidden to ever work in the Second parliament and vice versa.
There is no election treshold nor a limit on the number of political parties.
Current Election Result (as of 2012):
