”What? Is this the speech? This is blatant plagiarism!”
”No, they assured me there had been an all-clear from the patent office – it's just 'inspired', you see”
”I don't mean it like that, this is just horribly unethical, not to mention unoriginal! We're supposed to be a cultured nation!”
”Just go up there and do it, okay? The guys over at the Ministry said this was important, would be sure to win us the radical British romantic nationalist vote, Avaerilon and Kanoria you know.”
”Alright then... Just make sure I don't get any bovine waste poured over me from the Ministry afterwards...”
”No worries – they're the ones who wrote this.”
Encouraged by polite applause from the galleries, the bald, young deputy ambassador of Northern Inertia to the SLU made his way towards the podium. While the room was not entirely devoid of interest, there were quite a few representatives missing – they, like the Northern Inertian ambassador, had been summoned elsewhere to deal with the ongoing cybersecurity situation. Indeed, the deputy ambassador very much wished he, too, was busy hurling blaming fingers at Keron rather than here reading the peculiar words in front of him.
”Speaker, esteemed delegates;
When the hackers and raiders lay at the gates of Anaaxes, with their brute-force methods and their sleeper agents, someone told them: 'There is a well-functioning and democratic administration in the SLU'. This is certainly even more so since activity increased again recently. So, we have ourselves full confidence, that if the administration does its duty, as laid out in the constitution, if nothing is neglected, and if the best precautions are taken, as they are being taken, we shall always prove ourselves able to defend our region from outside harm, just as we are able to maintain our cherished democracy. The most important task of the Speaker is to actively maintain this democracy, to ride out any inactivity, and to outlast its threat to the democracy, if necessary by pestering the region with RMB messages, if necessary by proposing constitutional changes, like the one NAR is commendably bringing forward at this very moment. At any rate, this is what Northern Inertia, as Speaker, would try to do. It is our resolve to resort to whatever constitutional methods necessary to encourage activity in the Open Parliament, and to find candidates for all positions in the administration. It is our resolve to encourage discussion of SLUan law by increasing awareness not only of the constitution, but also of important acts – this way, there can be more discussion on what changes the Open Parliament ought to make.
As Speaker, we would use our experience from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to work alongside the Delegate on the contingency plan for the region. The offices of Speaker and Delegate, linked together in a common cause, should fight together to ensure the continuity of the region in any eventuality, aiding each other like good comrades to the utmost of their strength. We shall go on 'til the end of our constitutional term. We shall fight for an active judiciary, we shall fight for timely elections, we shall fight with growing strength and growing confidence as forum administrator. We shall maintain our democracy, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the RMB (though hopefully not too much), we shall fight on the SLU forums, we shall fight for constitutionality and for fairness. We shall fight for the SLU.
And even if, which we do not for a moment believe, this region or a large part of it were to become inactive, we shall carry on at a smaller scale; until, in Ainland's good time, new nations, with all their vitality and eagerness come to the rescue and revitalise the old.
Thank you for your time. I will remain on the floor, awaiting your questions.”
