Detailed Facts on the Issue
Greetings, and welcome to this Council of Leaders.
You may have heard the shocking media reports over the last few days, of mass-kidnappings in the area around the Republic of Be'thalia; specifically in-and-around the Gulf of No Return. Nearly one hundred men and women from numerous SLU nations are being held by criminal gangs of pirates, who are demanding huge ransoms from the families and friends of their victims. In some cases, the government of the home nation has been asked to intervene. However, many of our nations refuse to deal with pirates, prompting concerns that these people will never return home.
As a result of this pirate activity, many cargo-vessels are refusing to even go near Be'thalia, which has crippled the economy of the tentative nation. For those who need their memories refreshing, I shall explain the situation of Be'thalia.
Ten years ago, the Sultanate of Grand Be'thalai collapsed when the last Sultan attempted to install his daughter Karifi on the throne before he died. The actions of this rather progressive Sultan angered the deeply religious and conservative Brotherhood of Romnobusha, who declared a holy war upon the government.
With a bloody conflict raging, the government of Be'thalia appealed to the SLU for help. Many nations joined-together in sending a coordinated task-force to Be'thalia, which defeated the insurgents. With the demise of the Sultan, and to prevent tensions flaring-up again, Be'thalia became a republic and a beacon of a social democracy in the local area. However, the government required significant assistance of a political nature from various SLU nations to ensure it was not toppled.
It seems that the recent pirate attacks may well have contributed to a rising set of tensions in the region. With a crippled economy, the government is being held responsible by its own people, faced with hyperinflation of basic goods. Meanwhile, the more angry are turning to the illegal Brotherhood of Romnobusha. These terrorists are voicing their anger over the media, and the worry is that they may well attempt to stage another bloody insurgency in Be'thalia.
The President of the nation, Ms. Harkiria jen-Aloni, has appealed to the SLU for help. We must do something, or else risk a tragedy ince again in this stricken nation.
